Mission & Vission
Organization Name: American Saudade, Inc.
Description:
American Saudade, Inc. is a nonprofit 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to honoring and preserving the rich maritime heritage of Cape Verdean and Portuguese communities through educational outreach, community engagement, and cultural exploration. Founded by Vincent C. DaSilva, a U.S. Navy Veteran, Professional Mariner, and Commercial Diver of Portuguese/Cape Verdean descent, the organization seeks to connect present and future generations with their ancestral roots by retracing the historical voyages of their forefathers.
Our flagship project, “Saudade Adventure: A voyage into History,” involves the refitting of a sailboat named “S/V American Saudade,” preparing for a voyage from Rhode Island to the Azores, Madeira, and the Cape Verde Islands, and back. This journey will not only serve as a celebration of maritime heritage but also provide educational opportunities about the sea, sailing, and the experiences of early immigrant communities.
The organization will engage volunteers from local communities in the refit process and sea trials, fostering hands-on learning experiences and cultural exchange. Through workshops, events, and digital storytelling, American Saudade, Inc. aims to inspire a new generation to appreciate and preserve the maritime legacy of their ancestors.
Mission Statement:
The mission of American Saudade, Inc. is to celebrate and preserve the maritime heritage of Cape Verdean and Portuguese communities by engaging individuals through educational programs, community service, and cultural exchange.
